What is a peel?
Chemical peels have been tested thoroughly over the years and are here to stay. While it is said that your skin doesn’t have to peel with a peel, a chemical peel will help your skin regenerate in a controlled manner. Applied to the skin, a peel is a chemical solution, primarily acid-based, that causes skin to exfoliate and eventually peel off revealing a new, smoother, improved skin texture. Face peels, when properly applied, can work wonders on problem skin, treating acne, acne scarring, uneven skin tone and wrinkles successfully.
GTA Glycolic Acid Peel
Why a glycolic acid peel?
Glycolic acid, a naturally occurring substance derived from sugar cane, is part of a group of acids, Alpha Hydroxyl Acids, or AHAs, which also includes lactic acid. Glycolic acid is most commonly used for its ability to penetrate the outer layers of the skin due to its smaller molecular makeup. It is an essential ingredient in skin care products such as cleansers, toners, lotions, moisturizers, creams and serums.
How do they work?
A glycolic acid peel works on the skin the moment it is applied. By weakening the bond of the dead skin cells and exfoliating the upper layer of the skin, the peel not only reveals new skin cells, but also stimulates new collagen formation, thereby helping the growth of younger, healthier skin.
What are the benefits?
Glycolic acid peels, when performed regularly offer a tremendous improvement to the appearance, texture and tone of your skin. Acne scarring, fine wrinkles and hyperpigmentation are a few of the skin conditions that can be improved with a glycolic peel. Home kits have lower concentrations, while higher concentrations are found in treatments best applied by your aesthetician or dermatologist.
What are the side effects?
Chemical peels, including glycolic peels, are not for all skin types. The most common post treatment side effect is sun sensitivity. Skin that has been peeled is usually raw, irritated and susceptible to sun exposure. Depending on the strength of the peel, some redness and itching may occur, which may subside within a few days.
