As the years go on, our skin is constantly exposed to damages brought on by environmental and physiological factors. Fine lines and expression marks develop and years of sun exposure can cause sun damage and discoloration. These unsightly blemishes are unavoidable and if you’re wondering what you can do to rejuvenate your skin in a minimally invasive and inexpensive way, you should consider a microdermabrasion facial.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion treatment (not to be confused with dermabrasion treatment) is a skin rejuvenation procedure that utilizes minuscule exfoliating crystals that are applied across the skin via a diamond tip wand that acts as an abrasion tool. This procedure gently sands the skin, removing the thicker outer layer of skin (stratum corneum) revealing a new, smoother layer of skin underneath. By using an abrasion tool to remove skin and particle debris from the surface of the skin, microdermabrasion treatments promote both a more youthful appearance and a boost in overall skin health. Each microdermabrasion treatment session only lasts 30 minutes to an hour.
Microdermabrasion treatments are considered more effective on a variety of skin types than dermabrasion treatments (best for people of a fair skin type). Microdermabrasion is also considered a less aggressive procedure than dermabrasion as it requires no recovery time and no form of skin numbing in preparation for the treatment. As a minimally invasive skin exfoliation and rejuvenation treatment, microdermabrasion is the first choice for many wishing to treat hyperpigmentation, age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration.
For the most noticeable results, professionals recommend a total of three or more microdermabrasion facials. These sessions are typically performed one to three weeks apart. It is likely that you will experience a bit of redness upon completion of a microdermabrasion facial session and a gap in between each session is best to give the skin adequate time to adjust. While multiple microdermabrasion treatment sessions are required for the best results, it is likely that you will be able to increase the gap between sessions after the first few. Eventually, you may only need two sessions per year to maintain the best results (depending on the severity of skin damage). Microdermabrasion packages are the best choice for patients serious about seeing the best results as they include multiple sessions as well as various add-ons (like oxygen).
What to Expect After Your Microdermabrasion Facial
After the initial microdermabrasion treatment session, you can expect your complexion to have a pink or red hue but this will likely go away within a day. You may also find that your skin feels tight or sun-burned. Much like the skin discoloration, these sensations should subside fairly quickly.
While you can expect to see some improvement immediately after the session, optimal results will be observable only after all recommended treatment sessions. If you want to fully restore a youthful glow to your skin’s appearance, stay vigilant and complete all treatment sessions (recommended three).
Your provider will likely recommend that you keep your skin thoroughly moisturized following the procedure. It’s possible that some skin peeling may occur in treated areas but proper moisturizing efforts should reduce this.
It is also important to avoid direct sun exposure by all costs. If you’re absolutely unable to stay out of the sun’s rays following your microdermabrasion treatment, protect your skin with sunscreen SPF 15 or more. Immediate use of make-up products is best to avoid as well.
